Staples Canada Surpasses Sustainability Milestones Ahead of Schedule

In a remarkable display of commitment to environmental sustainability, Staples Canada has announced the surpassing of two key milestones well ahead of their 2025 targets. The company, known as The Working and Learning Company, has demonstrated significant progress in waste diversion and energy efficiency, underscoring its dedication to fostering a greener future.

Since the establishment of its 2025 Goals for a Greener Future in 2020, Staples Canada has diligently worked towards achieving its objectives with the support of sustainability partners. One of the notable achievements is the recycling of over 8 million writing instruments, accomplished through a partnership with TerraCycle. This initiative has provided Canadians with a convenient and free in-store solution for responsibly disposing of used writing instruments, thereby diverting significant amounts of waste from landfills.

Additionally, Staples Canada has successfully recycled more than 840,000 kilograms of batteries in collaboration with Call2Recycle Canada, further reducing its environmental footprint. The company’s commitment to sustainability has been recognized by Call2Recycle, which awarded Staples Canada the prestigious Leader in Sustainability Award for the fourth consecutive year in 2023.

In the realm of energy efficiency, Staples Canada has made notable strides by partnering with Bullfrog Power. All print orders processed through Staples Print Services, as well as operations at Staples Studio co-working spaces and its E-commerce platform, are now powered by 100% renewable electricity. This initiative not only reduces carbon emissions but also supports the development of renewable energy projects within local communities.

Furthermore, Staples Canada has made significant investments in transitioning its fleet to electric vehicles (EVs), resulting in a reduction of over 3,500 kilograms of CO2 equivalents in 2023 alone. The company plans to further expand the electrification of its fleet in the future, contributing to cleaner transportation solutions across the country.

Commenting on these achievements, Rachel Huckle, CEO of Staples Canada, expressed pride in the company’s progress and reiterated its commitment to championing sustainability objectives. “We’re continuously investing in our sustainability initiatives to offer simple and effective solutions to help Canadians make environmentally conscious decisions,” said Huckle.

Staples Canada’s dedication to environmental responsibility extends beyond its internal operations to include community engagement and consumer empowerment. With free recycling programs available for items such as ink and toner cartridges, electronics, and batteries, the company is empowering Canadians to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

As Staples Canada continues to lead the charge towards a greener future, its achievements serve as an inspiration for businesses and individuals alike to prioritize environmental sustainability in their operations and daily lives.

As consumers become increasingly mindful of their environmental footprint, businesses that prioritize sustainability not only fulfill their corporate social responsibility but also position themselves as leaders in their respective industries. Staples Canada’s success underscores the importance of setting ambitious yet achievable sustainability goals and collaborating with partners to bring about meaningful change.

Moreover, the company’s provision of free recycling solutions for customers reflects a commitment to empowering individuals to participate in environmental stewardship. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of shared responsibility for preserving the planet for future generations.
