By-Election for Ward 15, Don Valley West Scheduled for November 4
Toronto ON – Toronto City Clerk John D. Elvidge has officially announced the dates for the Ward 15, Don Valley West by-election. The key dates are as follows:
- Nominations Open: Monday, July 22 at 8:30 a.m.
- Nominations Close: Thursday, September 19 at 2 p.m.
- Advance Voting: Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Election Day: Monday, November 4, with voting locations open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
On June 26, Toronto City Council declared the office of Councillor for Ward 15, Don Valley West vacant and decided to fill the vacancy through a by-election. The by-law authorizing this by-election will take effect on Sunday, July 21 at 11:59 p.m.
Voting Options
Electors will have the option to vote by mail in this by-election, with more details to be announced in September.
Candidate Information
Potential candidates are reminded that they cannot incur campaign expenses or accept campaign contributions until they have filed nomination papers with the City Clerk, as per the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (MEA). For more information on the MEA, visit the Ontario government’s website.
Timing and Process
The City Clerk determines the timing of the by-election independently of Council. According to the MEA, the Clerk sets the nomination day (close of nominations) between 30 and 60 days after the by-law indicating a by-election is required is passed. Election day is then held 45 days after nomination day.
