Zellers Returns with Modern Small-Format Stores and the Beloved Zeddy Bear

Canadian retailer unveils Zellers 3.0 — a reimagined department store experience blending nostalgia and modern design

TORONTO — A Canadian classic is making its comeback. Zellers has officially announced its long-awaited return with a new small-format department store concept, marking the next chapter for one of the country’s most nostalgic retail brands.

Dubbed Zellers 3.0, the modern revival will bring back the brand’s signature warmth, affordability, and family-first approach in stores between 30,000 and 50,000 square feet — a more intimate, carefully curated version of the beloved retailer. The updated design combines Zellers’ heritage charm with a contemporary shopping experience focused on value, style, and community connection.

“Our vision for Zellers is to reignite a part of Canadian culture and redefine what a department store can be,” said Joey Benitah, Chief Operating Officer of Zellers. “Canadians told us they want an easy-to-shop experience that still delivers the accessibility and family-first values they remember. We recognized that Zellers works best as a small-concept department store — and that’s exactly what we’re bringing back.”

A Phased Rollout Across Canada

Zellers will soft launch at Londonderry Mall in Edmonton on October 30, 2025, serving as an early preview of the Zellers 3.0 model. Future stores across Canada will follow in Spring 2026, including select reimagined Hudson’s Bay locations repurposed into smaller, more efficient spaces.

Each store will emphasize Zellers’ core categories — apparel, home, and seasonal products — with a curated selection of brands such as Reebok, Spyder, Canada Weather Gear, Chaps, DKNY Kids, and Nickelodeon, Marvel, and Disney accessories. Footwear will also be introduced in future phases.

“We’re starting with products Canadians already love, and we’ll keep expanding based on their feedback,” said Benitah. “Each visit will bring something new — this is only the beginning.”

The Return of Zeddy: A Canadian Icon

No Zellers revival would be complete without Zeddy, the store’s beloved teddy bear mascot. The new “Zeddy’s World” section will allow families to customize Zeddy bears and outfits, creating a new generation of Zeddy fans.

Production of the new Zeddy bear is underway, with his official return set for 2026. The initiative also supports Zellers’ legacy of community giving — the retailer is developing a national partnership with pediatric oncology camps to support children and families affected by cancer.

“This is more than a store opening — it’s a cultural comeback,” added Benitah. “Zeddy represents the spirit of Zellers: friendly, affordable, and truly Canadian.”
