Youth Week in Toronto: Celebrating Talent, Creativity, and Community Engagement

Toronto – The City of Toronto is abuzz with excitement as Youth Week kicks off, celebrating the energy, creativity, and potential of its young residents. From May 1st to May 7th, a plethora of events and activities are taking place across the city, showcasing the talents and achievements of youth from diverse backgrounds.

One of the highlights of this year’s Youth Week is the launch of the Youth Poet Laureate program, an initiative aimed at honoring young writers and spoken-word artists between the ages of 16 and 27. The program, initiated by the Toronto Youth Cabinet with support from the city’s Poet Laureate Lillian Allen, aims to amplify youth voices and advocate for the power of poetry and the arts in storytelling and self-expression.

In addition to the Youth Poet Laureate program, a diverse array of events are taking place throughout the week, offering opportunities for youth to engage in visual and performing arts, personal development, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement.

From the ResilientTOgether arts showcase to the STOMP Urban Dance Competition, young Torontonians are taking center stage, demonstrating their creativity and talent. The Artists In The 6ix Gala and Marketplace, held in partnership with the University of Toronto’s Hart House, provides a platform for local youth artists to display and sell their work, fostering a supportive community for budding creatives.

Entrepreneurial-minded youth are also being supported through events like the Branded Youth Entrepreneurship conference, where Black, newcomer, and vulnerable youth can access networking, business consultation, and mentorship opportunities to turn their ideas into reality.

As Youth Week draws to a close, the Toronto Youth Cabinet will host its 25th Anniversary Gala and Identify ‘N Impact Awards, recognizing the contributions of Indigenous, Black, and equity-deserving youth to the city in nine award categories.
