WWF-Canada Adds Four New Species to Symbolic Adoption Program — Including Axolotl and Capybara

Adoption kits make perfect educational gifts while helping protect wildlife across Canada

TORONTO — World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada) has expanded its beloved symbolic adoption collection with four new species: the axolotl, capybara, northern cardinal, and sea otter family. Each adoption kit helps fund vital conservation projects that protect and restore habitats for species at risk across Canada.

The new additions tap into both cultural trends and conservation needs. The axolotl, a critically endangered salamander known for its permanent smile, and the capybara, a social media favourite, are expected to be popular choices this holiday season.

“Axolotls and capybaras are certainly having a moment, and now fans of these fascinating species can bring them home as a true-to-life plush while addressing a different kind of trend: declining wildlife populations,” said Kevin Cooper, Vice-President of Community Giving at WWF-Canada. “The conservation efforts these gifts support have never been more urgent.”

WWF-Canada’s latest Living Planet Report Canada shows that more than half of monitored species are decreasing in abundance, emphasizing the growing need for action.

Adopt a Species, Support Conservation

Each symbolic adoption kit includes:

  • A realistic plush animal designed by WWF species experts

  • An educational poster with facts about the chosen species and WWF’s conservation work

  • A personalized adoption certificate

  • An optional reusable tote bag for eco-friendly packaging

All adoption proceeds are tax-deductible and directly support WWF-Canada’s efforts to restore natural habitats and protect wildlife.

Shoppers can choose from 45+ symbolic adoptions, including Canadian icons like the grey wolf, narwhal, and polar bear, as well as global favourites such as the African elephant and gorilla.

Prices range from $50–$55 for individual species, $100 for wildlife families, and $135–$608 for curated adoption bundles.
