“We Were Broncos” Docuseries Follows Humboldt Survivor Ryan Straschnitzki on His Paralympic Journey

TORONTO — In a powerful new six-part documentary series debuting May 26 on AMI-tv and streaming on AMI+, the story of resilience, grief, and athletic transformation is brought to life through the eyes of Ryan Straschnitzki, a survivor of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Titled “We Were Broncos,” the docuseries follows Straschnitzki’s journey from a rising junior hockey player to a determined wheelchair basketball athlete aiming for a place on Canada’s Paralympic team. The AMI original production explores not only his physical recovery, but also the emotional and psychological toll of adapting to a new life after a tragedy that captivated the nation and devastated an entire community.

We Were Broncos is about perseverance in life and adaptive sport,” said Cara Nye, Director of Content Development and Production at AMI. “We sincerely thank Ryan, his family, and Prairie Cat Productions for allowing us to tell this story.

The series opener, “Moving Beyond Tragedy,” chronicles Straschnitzki’s decision to pivot from para ice hockey—after being cut by the national team—to wheelchair basketball, setting his sights on the Paralympics. Subsequent episodes dive into his athletic challenges, his first return to Humboldt, Saskatchewan, since the crash, and a special tribute at a Calgary Flames game honouring the late NHL player Johnny Gaudreau.

Produced by Prairie Cat Productions, a Canadian Screen Award-nominated company based in Regina, the series is deeply rooted in the Canadian Prairie experience and accessible storytelling.

Season 1 of We Were Broncos premieres Monday, May 26 at 9 p.m. ET on AMI-tv and is available to stream for free on AMI+.
