Candidate Nominations and Third Party Advertiser Registration Open June 23 for Ward 25 By-Election

Advance voting set for September 20 and 21; Election Day is September 29

Toronto — The City of Toronto will begin accepting nominations for candidates in the upcoming Ward 25, Scarborough–Rouge Park by-election starting Monday, June 23, as the race to fill the vacant Councillor seat officially gets underway.

Prospective candidates can submit their nomination papers in person at the Toronto Elections office at City Hall (100 Queen St. W., first floor, Permit Alley) between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, until the deadline at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 15. All nominations must include a $100 filing fee, proof of qualifying address in Toronto, and a minimum of 25 endorsements from eligible voters with original signatures.

No campaign activity, including fundraising or spending, is permitted until a candidate has officially filed their nomination.

The City has also announced key voting dates: advance polls will be open on Saturday, September 20, and Sunday, September 21. Election Day is scheduled for Monday, September 29.

Third Party Advertiser Registration Also Opens June 23

In addition to candidate nominations, individuals, corporations, and trade unions wishing to register as third party advertisers can do so beginning June 23 through to Friday, September 26. Registrations must be submitted in person at the same Toronto Elections City Hall office.

Only after the City Clerk certifies a third party registration can campaign-related spending, contribution collection, or advertisement placement begin. All third party advertisers must follow the rules set out in the Municipal Elections Act, including clear identification on all promotional materials.

More information—including nomination forms, election rules, and requirements for third party advertisers—is available online at: toronto.ca/ByElection.

As nominations are received, the City will publish the names of all uncertified candidates on the by-election webpage. The official list of certified candidates will be released after nominations close in August.
