Visit Mississauga Unveils Special Edition of Your City Mississauga Magazine Celebrating 50 Years of History
MISSISSAUGA – Mississauga residents and history enthusiasts have a new reason to celebrate as Visit Mississauga releases a special edition of Your City Mississauga magazine. Written by award-winning writer Lisa Hrabluk, this commemorative issue explores the city’s rich history, highlighting key moments, hidden gems, and the people who have shaped Mississauga over the past 50 years.
The magazine compiles excerpts from We Built This City, a blog and podcast series launched by Visit Mississauga last year to celebrate the city’s milestone anniversary. The series showcases 50 compelling stories, featuring both renowned public figures and everyday heroes who have contributed to Mississauga’s legacy.
Among the fascinating historical tidbits, readers will discover that Colonel Sanders, the face of KFC, once called Mississauga home, and that Canada’s first commercial winery was established in Cooksville. The issue also explores the city’s contributions to the aerospace industry in the 1950s, as well as the legacy of reggae pioneer Jerry Brown, a founding father of Canada’s reggae scene. Additional features include profiles of cultural icons such as Mazo de la Roche, Oscar Peterson, and The Beatles’ connection to the city.
Residents can pick up a free copy of Your City Mississauga at various distribution points across Peel, including Hazel McCallion Central Library and select Mississauga library locations, Benares and Bradley Museum, and No Frills and Loblaws stores citywide. Copies are also available at select local businesses, thanks to distribution efforts by The Rotary Club of Mississauga and Graymatter Media. A digital edition is accessible online for those who prefer to read it digitally.
For those who would rather listen to history unfold, the We Built This City podcast offers an engaging alternative. Ranked among the Top 50 in Apple Podcasts’ History category in 2024, the podcast has amassed over 5.3 million impressions and has been featured on CBC Podcasts. Hosted by Lisa Hrabluk in partnership with Podstarter, the 10-episode series brings Mississauga’s stories to life and is available for streaming on major podcast platforms and online at webuiltthiscity.ca.
