Vilnius Emerges as Safe and Welcoming Destination for Solo Female Travelers
Vilnius solo female travel safety attracts women seeking secure European destinations
As solo travel continues to rise globally, Lithuania’s capital is gaining recognition as a safe and accessible destination for women exploring the world independently.
According to recent global data, women now account for approximately 75 per cent of solo travellers, with safety remaining the top priority for the majority when selecting destinations.
Strong Safety Rankings Support Growing Appeal
Vilnius is increasingly being highlighted as a leading option for solo female travellers, supported by strong international rankings.
Lithuania placed 16th out of 181 countries in the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Index, which evaluates inclusion, justice and security. The broader Baltic region — including Latvia and Estonia — consistently ranks among the top-performing areas globally in these categories.
Tourism officials say the city’s low crime rates and compact, walkable layout contribute to a sense of safety and ease for visitors.
“Vilnius has been ranked as one of the safest cities in Europe for a while,” said Eglė Girdzijauskaitė, Head of Communications at Go Vilnius, the city’s official tourism and business development agency. “It offers solo female travelers a welcoming and easy-to-navigate environment that encourages exploration.”
Connection and Community at the Forefront
Beyond safety, research shows that solo travellers are increasingly seeking authentic connections and local experiences.
A recent survey found that 66 per cent of travellers actively look to meet locals, with younger and older generations leading that trend.
Vilnius has responded with initiatives such as the Meet a Local program, which connects visitors with residents who provide personalized tours and insights into the city’s culture and history.
The program has already attracted hundreds of participants, offering travellers a deeper and more personal way to experience the destination.
A Balance of Culture, Nature and Accessibility
Vilnius is also gaining traction for its blend of cultural attractions and natural surroundings.
Often described as a “city in a forest,” more than half of the city is covered in green space, making it one of the greenest urban centres in Europe. Visitors can explore a UNESCO-listed Old Town, while also enjoying outdoor activities such as walking trails and riverside experiences.
In addition, the city’s culinary and café scene continues to grow, with a mix of traditional Lithuanian cuisine and modern dining options, alongside a strong independent coffee culture.
A Less Crowded Alternative in Europe
Travel experts note that Vilnius offers many of the features found in larger European capitals — including history, architecture and cuisine — but without the high visitor volumes seen in cities like Paris or Rome.
This combination of safety, affordability and accessibility is positioning the city as an appealing alternative for travellers seeking a more relaxed and manageable experience.
Vilnius also benefits from regional connectivity, with rail and ferry links providing easy access to neighbouring Baltic countries and Scandinavia.
A Growing Destination for Modern Travelers
As travel preferences continue to evolve, destinations that offer security, authenticity and meaningful experiences are becoming increasingly important.
For solo female travellers, Vilnius is emerging as a city that meets those expectations — combining a strong safety profile with opportunities for cultural immersion and personal connection.
