Vilnius Positioned as a Green, Crowd-Free Alternative for Summer Travel in Europe
Vilnius green travel Europe trend grows as travellers seek less crowded destinations
As Europe prepares for a busy summer travel season, Lithuania’s capital is emerging as a quieter and greener alternative to more congested destinations.
According to tourism officials, Vilnius is well positioned to attract international visitors seeking less crowded city experiences, particularly as the European Union prepares to roll out its new Entry/Exit System (EES) on April 10, 2026.
The new system will require non-EU travellers entering the Schengen area to complete biometric registration, a change expected to increase wait times at already busy airports in Western Europe during peak travel periods.
A Shift Toward Less Crowded Destinations
At the same time, travel trends show growing interest in destinations that offer both accessibility and environmental sustainability.
Search interest in “greenest city in the world” has surged significantly over the past year, reflecting a broader shift toward eco-conscious travel and nature-based experiences.
Vilnius has gained international recognition for its environmental credentials. The city was named European Green Capital for 2025 by the European Commission and ranks among the top green cities globally, with more than 60 per cent of its area covered by green space.
Often described as a “city in a forest,” Vilnius features an urban landscape where nature is integrated into everyday life, including its UNESCO-listed Old Town.
Nature Meets Urban Living
One of Vilnius’s defining characteristics is its accessibility to nature within the city itself.
Activities such as cycling, kayaking and forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) can take place within minutes of the city centre, without the need for long-distance travel.
Local tourism representatives note that this combination of urban living and green space allows visitors to experience nature in a more spontaneous and immersive way.
Cultural Events Drive Summer Tourism
In addition to its natural setting, Vilnius is preparing for a busy cultural calendar throughout the spring and summer months.
Upcoming events include:
- New Baltic Dance (April 23–25): A contemporary dance festival marking its 20th edition
- Open House Vilnius (May 16–17): Public access to more than 140 architectural sites
- Vilnius Mama Jazz (May 22–24): A three-day international jazz festival
- Vilnius Half Marathon (May 23): A race through the city’s historic streets
- Vilnius Pink Soup Festival (May 29–31): A culinary event celebrating traditional Lithuanian cuisine
- Culture Night (June 12): A city-wide arts and performance festival
- Lithuanian Youth Song Festival (July 3–6): A large-scale cultural event featuring thousands of participants
These events are expected to draw visitors looking for both cultural experiences and outdoor activities in a less crowded environment.
A Strategic Alternative for Summer Travel
With major European cities facing increasing visitor volumes and new entry procedures, destinations like Vilnius are positioning themselves as efficient entry points into the region.
The city’s combination of green infrastructure, cultural programming and manageable scale offers an alternative for travellers seeking a more relaxed and accessible European experience.
As summer approaches, Vilnius is expected to benefit from shifting travel patterns that favour sustainability, shorter wait times and unique local experiences.
