Vancouver Bartender Wins World Class Canada Title, Heads to Global Finals in Toronto
COLLINGWOOD, ON — After three days of intense competition and seven mixology challenges, Kate Chernoff of Keefer Bar in Vancouver has been named the Diageo WORLD CLASS Canada Bartender of the Year 2025. The prestigious title was awarded yesterday in Collingwood, Ontario, marking a major milestone in Canada’s cocktail scene.
Chernoff’s mastery of storytelling, technique, and flavour impressed judges throughout the competition, particularly in creative challenges like Winter is Here, which pushed bartenders to balance both hot and cold serves, and A Sense of Place, a tribute to Canada’s diverse hospitality culture.
She now moves on to represent Canada at the Diageo WORLD CLASS Global competition, set to take place in Toronto this September. The global finals will draw top bartenders from around the world to showcase their talents on Canadian soil.
“Winning the title of WORLD CLASS Canada Bartender of the Year is an incredible honour,” said Chernoff, reflecting on the journey. “This experience has challenged me to elevate my creativity, technique, and hospitality.”
Last year’s champion, Keegan McGregor of Halifax’s The Highwayman, who also took the global title in 2024, was present to pass the torch.
The competition is organized by Diageo, whose portfolio includes notable brands like Don Julio, Tanqueray No. Ten, Johnnie Walker, and Ketel One. Each round of the contest is designed around the five pillars of a world-class bartender: hosting, craft, flavour analysis, knowledge, and advocacy.
“This program continues to elevate Canadian cocktail culture,” said Michael Armistead, Diageo Canada’s National Reserve and Sponsorship Manager. “Kate’s creativity and passion truly stood out, and we look forward to supporting her at the global final.”
The WORLD CLASS platform serves as both a celebration of mixology and a mentorship network for Canada’s top bartenders, pushing the boundaries of modern cocktail-making.
The upcoming global final in Toronto will be one of the most anticipated events on the international bartending calendar, spotlighting Canada’s growing influence in the world of hospitality.
