Uber, Lucid, and Nuro Partner on Global Robotaxi Program Featuring 20,000 Autonomous Vehicles
Next-generation Lucid Gravity EVs powered by Nuro’s Level 4 autonomy to launch on Uber platform in 2026
In a bold step toward the future of autonomous transportation, Uber Technologies, Lucid Group, and Nuro have announced a landmark partnership to launch a global robotaxi program powered by artificial intelligence and electric vehicle innovation.
Over the next six years, Uber plans to deploy 20,000+ Lucid Gravity vehicles integrated with Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous Nuro Driver™ across dozens of global markets. The first wave of these high-tech robotaxis will hit the road in a major U.S. city in 2026 — offering a premium, driverless experience exclusively through the Uber app.
“This robotaxi program, purpose-built for Uber, is a breakthrough in safety, comfort, and scale,” said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. “We’re excited to bring the magic of autonomous driving to millions around the world.”
A New Vision for Autonomy
The vehicles will be owned and operated by Uber or its fleet partners and will feature:
-
Lucid Gravity’s long-range EV platform (up to 450 miles EPA estimated)
-
Redundant safety architecture and spacious interior designs
-
Nuro’s AI-powered self-driving system, proven in real-world deployments
Each Lucid Gravity robotaxi will be assembled at Lucid’s Arizona facility and equipped with Nuro’s hardware before receiving the autonomous software upon fleet activation.
The trio of companies say the collaboration is designed to maximize asset utilization, reduce operational costs, and ensure safety through closed-course and on-road testing.
“This partnership validates Lucid’s architecture as ideal for autonomy,” said Marc Winterhoff, Interim CEO at Lucid.
“Together with Uber’s platform and our scalable AI, we’ll show the world how autonomy can succeed,” added Jiajun Zhu, CEO of Nuro.
Investing in the Future
Uber also announced multi-hundred-million-dollar investments in both Nuro and Lucid as part of the collaboration — further cementing its ambitions to lead in the next generation of urban mobility.
Uber currently facilitates 34 million trips per day in over 70 countries, providing the scale and network to make robotaxis a mainstream transit option.
The Lucid-Nuro prototype has already begun autonomous testing at Nuro’s proving grounds in Las Vegas, with public deployment expected to expand rapidly after the initial U.S. launch.
