Trudeau Urges De-escalation in Middle East During Call with Lebanese PM Mikati
Ottawa, Ontario –Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke today with Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The conversation focused on the urgent need to de-escalate the conflict, particularly along the Lebanon-Israel border, and addressed the severe impact recent events have had on civilians in Lebanon.
Trudeau expressed deep concern about the rising civilian toll in Lebanon, where hundreds have been killed in airstrikes. He emphasized that Lebanon’s people deserve peace and security and should not suffer due to the actions of Hezbollah, which Canada designates as a terrorist organization. The Prime Minister also highlighted the effects on Canadian families, particularly those with loved ones who have been killed or injured in the region.

The two leaders discussed joint efforts aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire and finding diplomatic solutions. Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to peace through international cooperation, citing Canada’s push for a 21-day ceasefire along the Lebanon-Israel border. He also underscored Canada’s support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for the disarmament of armed groups in Lebanon, and Resolution 2735, focused on a ceasefire in Gaza.
Both leaders expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis and stressed the importance of upholding international humanitarian law. They called for safe access for aid organizations and protection for civilian infrastructure, which has been increasingly at risk during the conflict. Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s recent commitment of $10 million in humanitarian aid to Lebanon, aimed at addressing the urgent needs of civilians affected by the violence.
Trudeau and Mikati also highlighted the enduring connections between Canada and Lebanon, acknowledging the significant contributions of Lebanese Canadians to the country. They agreed to maintain close communication as the situation in the region continues to evolve.
