Trudeau Meets with DRC Prime Minister to Strengthen Ties and Address Humanitarian Crisis
Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed Judith Suminwa Tuluka, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to Ottawa yesterday for a high-level meeting aimed at bolstering Canada-DRC relations. This marks Prime Minister Suminwa’s first visit to Canada since her historic appointment in April as the DRC’s first female Prime Minister.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Trudeau congratulated Suminwa on her groundbreaking leadership role and emphasized Canada’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the DRC. Discussions highlighted shared interests, including promoting French-language education in both countries to further cultural and educational ties.
The two leaders also explored opportunities to expand economic cooperation. Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s intention to increase engagement in Africa, particularly in the DRC’s mining, energy, infrastructure, IT, and agriculture sectors.
A key focus of the discussion was the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the DRC, especially in the eastern region, where conflict continues to displace thousands. Both leaders expressed concern and underscored the urgency of finding a lasting solution. Prime Minister Trudeau voiced Canada’s support for ongoing negotiations within the Luanda Process, an African-led initiative aimed at resolving the crisis.
In a joint commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, the leaders agreed to maintain regular communication as they work to address shared challenges and opportunities.
This meeting underscores Canada’s broader goals to deepen its presence in Africa while championing global stability and cooperation.
