Trudeau Meets Peruvian President Boluarte at APEC Summit
LIMA, PERU — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with President Dina Boluarte of Peru during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima on Friday. The meeting, which highlighted Canada and Peru’s robust partnership, coincided with the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations and the 15th anniversary of the Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement.
Trudeau, accompanied by Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development Mary Ng, congratulated President Boluarte on Peru’s leadership as APEC host. The Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement has played a pivotal role in doubling bilateral merchandise trade over the past 15 years, fostering economic opportunities for businesses and citizens in both countries.

Notable initiatives include the Chavimochic irrigation project, supported by the Canadian Commercial Corporation, and the establishment of a Canada-Peru Dialogue on Critical Minerals and Mining Sustainability.
Canada announced new investments to bolster Peru’s efforts in economic diversification, labour formalization, and inclusive growth. These initiatives include funding to enhance occupational safety for agricultural workers and technical assistance for Peru’s judiciary to improve access to justice for Indigenous communities.
The leaders also turned their attention to the political situation in Venezuela, underscoring the need for transparency and respect for the democratic will of Venezuelans following the country’s recent presidential election.
With a shared focus on economic and social development, Trudeau and Boluarte agreed to remain in close contact to build on the progress achieved in their meeting.
