Trudeau, Houston Discuss Affordability, Infrastructure, and Trade in Halifax Meeting
Halifax, Nova Scotia – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston today in Halifax to discuss a range of shared priorities following Houston’s recent re-election. Joined by Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, the meeting underscored the federal and provincial governments’ commitment to collaboration on key issues affecting Nova Scotians.
Infrastructure projects featured prominently in the talks, with a focus on advancing work on the Chignecto Isthmus, a critical transportation corridor connecting Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The leaders also discussed progress on changes to the elver fishery and efforts to establish a bilateral agreement under the National School Food Program, aimed at supporting families and addressing food security.

Economic growth opportunities were also on the agenda, with both leaders highlighting the importance of artificial intelligence as a shared priority. They explored strategies to grow the life sciences sector in Nova Scotia, leveraging federal and provincial resources to boost innovation and create jobs.
Addressing climate action, Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated that the federal government remains open to Nova Scotia implementing its own carbon pricing plan, provided it meets the national minimum benchmark. The discussion on affordability included a review of the federal GST tax break and broader strategies to help Nova Scotians cope with rising living costs.
Trade relations between Canada and the United States were another key topic, as both leaders emphasized the importance of a “Team Canada” approach to advancing economic interests. Strengthening partnerships between federal, provincial, and territorial governments remains a priority to ensure Canada remains competitive on the global stage.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together on these and other critical issues to improve the lives of Nova Scotians and Canadians across the country.
