Trudeau and Yoon Reaffirm Canada-South Korea Partnership Amid Global Instability
LIMA, PERU – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol today on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru. The leaders discussed the robust relationship between Canada and South Korea, emphasizing their shared commitment to enhanced co-operation under the Canada-Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The Prime Minister and President highlighted the successes of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement, which has boosted bilateral trade and investment by 82.6 per cent since its implementation in 2015. They noted the agreement’s role in creating opportunities for businesses and individuals in both nations and explored further avenues for collaboration, particularly in artificial intelligence and renewable energy, including nuclear power.
The leaders expressed grave concerns about North Korea’s recent troop deployment in support of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Both condemned the action, reaffirming their commitment to holding Russia accountable. Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine and praised President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s diplomatic efforts toward achieving a just and sustainable peace.
As Canada and South Korea continue to strengthen their ties, the leaders emphasized the importance of remaining united in addressing shared global challenges. They agreed to maintain regular communication and work closely on key priorities, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two countries.
