Trudeau and Duda Reaffirm Commitment to Holocaust Remembrance and Support for Ukraine

OŚWIĘCIM, POLAND – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Polish President Andrzej Duda yesterday during a significant commemorative event marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the former Nazi concentration and extermination camp.

The leaders joined in paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, emphasizing the importance of remembrance, education against Holocaust denial and distortion, and the global fight against antisemitism and hate.

Their meeting came at a critical time, as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches its three-year mark. Both leaders strongly condemned Russia’s aggression and reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine. Highlighting the deep cooperation between Canada and Poland, they discussed the continued collaborative efforts to aid Ukraine in its defense and humanitarian needs.

Prime Minister Trudeau and President Duda also reiterated their commitment to regional security, particularly on NATO’s Eastern Flank, underscoring the importance of a united front against emerging threats in the region.

Additionally, the two leaders explored opportunities to deepen bilateral relations, including potential cooperation in the nuclear sector. The discussions reflected the strong ties between Canada and Poland and a shared vision for addressing global challenges.

The commemorative event served as a solemn reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust and the ongoing need to stand against hatred in all its forms while fostering international partnerships to promote peace and security.
