Toyota Unveils 2025 GR86 Hakone Special Edition, A Modern Tribute to an Icon
PLANO, Texas – Toyota is bringing back a beloved classic for the 2025 model year with the reintroduction of the GR86 Hakone Special Edition. Inspired by the iconic Hakone Turnpike in Japan, this special edition of the GR86 is designed to turn heads with its bold Ridge Green exterior.
The 2025 GR86 Hakone Special Edition builds on the GR86 Premium grade and offers a choice between a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, powered by a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder boxer engine that produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The special edition features 18-inch satin bronze-finished wheels, a color-keyed duck-tail spoiler, black accents, and a Hakone badge.
Inside, the GR86 Hakone offers Ultrasuede® sport seats with tan leather trim and stitching, a unique shift knob with bronze accents, and a GR special edition plaque. Performance enhancements include standard Brembo® Brakes and SACHS Dampers for an exceptional driving experience.
With only 860 units set for production in the U.S. for 2025, the GR86 Hakone Special Edition will be available at Toyota dealerships starting in Fall 2024. Pricing details for the GR86 Hakone Special Edition and the full 2025 GR86 lineup will be announced later this year.
Enhanced Driving Performance
Toyota GAZOO Racing has infused the 2025 GR86 with cutting-edge engineering from the track. Updates include re-tuned shock absorbers for better handling, improved throttle mapping for smoother downshifts, and enhanced engine torque control for more direct throttle response. The Electric Power Steering has also been fine-tuned for better road feedback.
The GR86 Hakone comes standard with SACHS Dampers and Brembo® Brakes. These components are also available in a Performance Package for other 2025 GR86 models. The chassis combines high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel, and aluminum for a balance of roll and pitch, optimizing control.
Lightweight Design
Weighing just 2,811 pounds for the manual transmission model, the GR86 remains one of the lightest sports cars on the market. The use of an aluminum hood, front fenders, and roof panel, along with lightweight seats, helps maintain this low weight.
The 2.4-liter FA-24 engine provides a dynamic driving experience, with peak torque at 3,700 RPM. The GR86 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds (manual) and 6.6 seconds (automatic). Both versions come with a Torsen® limited-slip rear differential for improved traction during cornering.
Interior and Technology
The GR86 features a driver-focused cockpit with a digital instrument panel, push-button start, LED HVAC controls, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls. The automatic model includes paddle shifters and a manual downshift mode.
Standard technology includes an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system. The Hakone Special Edition and Premium grades come with an eight-speaker audio system, while the Base grade has a six-speaker system. Seating options range from Ultrasuede® and leather-trimmed seats in the Premium grade to sport fabric in the Base grade.
Safety and Connectivity
All GR86 models come with an Active Safety Suite, including Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and more. The Star Safety System™ features Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, and Hill Start Assist. Additional safety includes seven airbags and a Tire Pressure Monitor System.
Connected Services trials offer features like Safety Connect®, Service Connect, and Remote Connect, allowing drivers to interact with their vehicle via a smartphone app.
Complimentary NASA Membership
Purchasing a 2025 GR86 includes a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), offering benefits such as a free High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) and discounts on NASA events.
Warranty and ToyotaCare
The GR86 is covered by a 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 60-month powertrain warranty, and a corrosion warranty with no mileage limit. ToyotaCare covers factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles and provides 24-hour roadside assistance for two years, regardless of mileage.
