Toronto to Host Inaugural Bealtaine Theatre Festival, Showcasing Ireland’s Brightest Artistic Voices

Toronto, ON – A vibrant new cultural festival is set to debut in Toronto this spring as the Bealtaine Theatre Festival makes its inaugural appearance. Presented by the Canada Ireland Foundation, this month-long celebration of Irish arts and culture will run from April 25 to May 25, 2025, bringing a dynamic lineup of performances in theatre, music, dance, and storytelling to venues across the city.

Named after the ancient Celtic festival of Bealtaine (pronounced Byal-tin-uh)—which marks the arrival of summer—the festival aims to foster a cultural bridge between Ireland and Canada. Audiences can expect bold theatre productions, immersive storytelling, and innovative performances from some of Ireland’s most exciting contemporary voices.

A Diverse Lineup of Performances

The festival’s premiere season will feature a mix of theatrical works, from quirky and experimental productions to deeply personal solo performances and family-friendly storytelling adventures.

Festival Highlights:

  • The King of All Birds (April 25-27, Ontario Heritage Center) – A visually and sonically mesmerizing journey into humanity’s fascination with flight, blending song, vocoder effects, film collage, and music.

  • Tom Moran is a Big Fat Filthy Disgusting Liar (May 2-3, Theatre Passe Muraille) – A critically acclaimed solo performance exploring masculinity, childhood, and personal truth through humor and heartfelt storytelling.

  • Story of a Day – Scéal Lae (May 17-18, Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse) – A poetic and music-filled production designed for young audiences, celebrating the magic in everyday life.

  • The Libravian (May 24-25, Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse) – A whimsical family-friendly adventure through literature, featuring inventive costumes, sound design, and physical theatre.

A New Chapter in Toronto’s Cultural Scene

The festival represents an exciting new addition to Toronto’s arts landscape, offering both Irish expats and local audiences a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary Irish storytelling and performance. With a mix of emerging and established artists, the Bealtaine Theatre Festival is set to become a standout annual event in the city’s festival calendar.
