Toronto Theatre Explores Digital Existentialism with HONEY I’M HOME
Toronto, ON – In a captivating exploration of the absurdities of modern work life and the encroaching influence of technology, award-winning multidisciplinary duo Lester Trips presents HONEY I’M HOME. This darkly comedic production, created and performed by Lauren Gillis and Alaine Hutton, delves into the dystopian realities many workers face today.
The play follows Janine, an ordinary workaholic who uploads her consciousness into her home in a desperate bid to escape the monotony of her job. However, when her slow Wi-Fi leads to a shocking revelation, her mundane existence spirals into a nightmarish body horror mystery. The production tackles the question: what happens when artificial intelligence takes over our jobs, but our physical bodies still need to engage with the world?
Combining physical theatre with sharp humor, HONEY I’M HOME offers audiences a surreal look at a digital hell that feels all too familiar. It promises to confront the discomforts we’ve come to accept in an increasingly tech-dominated world.
The production boasts an impressive creative team, including dense sound design and a vocal score by composer S. Quinn Hoodless and vocal coach Fides Krucker, which collectively evoke a charming yet eerie digital landscape. Innovative lighting by André du Toit complements the physical performances, enhanced by butoh-inspired movement coaching from Denise Fujiwara.
Mel Hague, Factory Theatre’s Artistic Director and dramaturge for the show, praised Lester Trips’ work, stating, “Lauren and Alaine have honed an uncanny ability to observe the deeply uncomfortable things we have accepted as normal in our world, and pull that discomfort to the surface.”
