City of Toronto Renames Rosebank Park in Honour of Late Councillor Cynthia Lai

Toronto – The City of Toronto has officially renamed Rosebank Park in Scarborough as Cynthia Lai Park, paying tribute to the late Toronto City Councillor Cynthia Lai, who passed away on October 1, 2022.

Located at 1051 Progress Ave., the 4.3-hectare park features open green spaces, horticultural displays, and basketball courts. The renaming reflects Councillor Lai’s deep connection to the area, with the support of her family in choosing the park as the most fitting location to honour her legacy.

Celebrating Cynthia Lai’s Legacy

Councillor Lai was first elected to Toronto City Council in 2018, representing Scarborough North until her passing. She was known as a strong advocate for the city’s diverse communities, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout her time in office.

Her commitment to environmental initiatives, particularly her support for clean-up and maintenance efforts in Scarborough’s parks, makes the park dedication especially meaningful.

Remarks from City Leaders

Mayor Olivia Chow highlighted Lai’s enduring impact:

“Cynthia Lai was a passionate champion for families and communities in Scarborough. Naming Cynthia Lai Park after her is a fitting tribute, as it will forever stand as a place where her mission of creating a better Scarborough and Toronto can be enjoyed by all.”

Councillor Jamaal Myers (Scarborough North) added:

“Cynthia Lai cared deeply for Toronto and, in particular, for the Scarborough North community. She was an advocate for her constituents and was committed to building a city that was more equitable and community-focused. Rosebank Park held a special meaning for her and naming it in her honour ensures that her legacy will live on right here in the heart of our community.”

A Lasting Memorial

The renaming of Cynthia Lai Park ensures that her contributions to civic life and her dedication to public service are recognized for generations to come. The space will now serve as both a recreational hub for residents and a living tribute to her leadership.
