Toronto Port Authority Returns to Historic Name, Reaffirming Role as Key GTA Economic Engine
Toronto Port Authority rebrand highlights renewed focus on Billy Bishop Airport, the Port of Toronto, and regional growth
TORONTO — The organization that owns and operates Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and oversees Toronto’s harbour has officially returned to its historic name, once again operating as the Toronto Port Authority, marking a rebrand that coincides with its 115th year as a city-building institution.
After a decade operating as PortsToronto, the reversion to the Toronto Port Authority reflects a return to its legal federal identity and a renewed focus on its long-standing role as a steward of the city’s waterfront and a critical economic connector for the Greater Toronto Area and Canada.
The rebrand comes at a time of rapid regional growth and heightened national attention on resilient supply chains, modernized infrastructure, and sustainable urban transportation. Central to that role is Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, alongside the Port of Toronto, the Cruise Ship Terminal, and the Outer Harbour Marina.
Billy Bishop Airport anchors urban connectivity and economic output
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport continues to serve as one of Canada’s most important urban airports, generating approximately $2 billion in annual economic output and supporting more than 4,500 jobs across the region. Located just minutes from downtown Toronto, the airport plays a vital role in business travel, regional connectivity, and medical transportation services.
The airport is also preparing for the launch of U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance in early 2026, a move expected to further strengthen cross-border business travel and trade, with additional destinations anticipated later in the year.
Port of Toronto supports supply chains and sustainability goals
Beyond aviation, the Port of Toronto remains a critical piece of the GTA’s logistics and supply chain network, generating more than $460 million in economic activity annually. The port handles imports of essential materials such as steel, cement, sugar, and road salt, supporting construction, infrastructure, and food supply needs across the region.
Marine shipping through the port removes more than 51,000 truckloads from GTA roads each year, helping to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions while supporting more sustainable goods movement.
The Toronto Port Authority also operates the Port of Toronto Cruise Ship Terminal, which welcomes close to 20,000 visitors annually and contributes to the broader $280-million Great Lakes tourism economy, benefiting Toronto’s hospitality, retail, and cultural sectors.
A unique multi-modal transportation model
As the only port authority in Canada that owns and operates an airport, the Toronto Port Authority occupies a unique position in the country’s transportation landscape. Its integrated network of aviation, marine shipping, tourism, and marina operations allows Toronto to function as a truly multi-modal gateway connecting Canada’s largest city to domestic and international markets.
The organization operates under a federal mandate and is financially self-sustaining, reinvesting revenues into infrastructure, harbour management, environmental initiatives, and community programs. In recent years, it has invested more than $30 million in charitable and environmental initiatives benefiting waterfront communities.
Looking ahead
The return to the Toronto Port Authority name underscores a long-term commitment to responsible stewardship, modernization, and balancing commercial activity with environmental protection and public access. As Toronto prepares for continued growth, the authority positions its transportation assets to support economic resilience, sustainable mobility, and urban connectivity well into the next century.
