Toronto Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art 90,000 sq. ft. Paramedic Station
TORONTO — Mayor Olivia Chow joined Toronto Paramedic Services Chief Bikram Chawla and City staff today to break ground on a new 90,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art paramedic multi-function station at 300 Progress Avenue.
The facility, known as Toronto Paramedic Services Multi-Function Station 02, will be strategically located to enhance emergency response capacity across the city. Designed to house up to 40 ambulances and 20 emergency response vehicles, the station will also include administrative offices, a modern logistics and equipment services area, and serve as the headquarters for Toronto Paramedic Service’s Education and Development team.
Award-Winning, Net-Zero Design
The facility has already received recognition, earning an Award of Merit from the 2021 Canadian Architect Awards for its forward-thinking design. Its sustainability features include:
-
Mass-timber structure
-
Solar wall
-
Geothermal heating
-
Photovoltaic roofscape expected to generate over 1,000,000 kWh annually, offsetting the entire building’s electricity demand
-
All-electric mechanical system, triple-pane windows, and high-thermal resistance walls and roofing
Together, these innovations will ensure the facility meets the City’s Net Zero Standards, reducing community-wide greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening frontline services.

Strengthening Public Safety
Mayor Chow emphasized the City’s commitment to modernizing emergency response:
“We’re expanding and modernizing our emergency services facilities and hiring more than 330 paramedics. So that when Torontonians are in their greatest time of need, there’s someone always there to help. This investment is part of our plan to build safer and stronger communities across the City.”
Chief Chawla highlighted the significance of the project for a growing city:
“As our city continues to grow, and the demands on our Service increase, this new multi-function station reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation and improved emergency response to Toronto’s residents and visitors.”
Canada’s Largest Municipal Paramedic Service
Toronto Paramedic Services is the largest municipal paramedic service in Canada, providing 24/7 pre-hospital emergency and non-emergency care, alongside public education programs that promote the rapid and effective use of emergency medical resources.
The new station is expected to be completed by early 2029, marking a major milestone in equipping first responders with modern, sustainable infrastructure to keep Toronto residents safe.
