Toronto Paramedic Services Welcomes 55 New Frontline Recruits at Graduation Ceremony

Toronto, ON – In a ceremony held on November 26, 2024, Toronto Paramedic Services (TPS) officially welcomed 55 new frontline recruits into its ranks, marking a significant boost to the city’s emergency services workforce. The event, attended by Mayor Olivia Chow, TPS Chief Bikram Chawla, and other City of Toronto officials, celebrated the graduates’ completion of rigorous training and orientation programs.

The new recruits include 38 Primary Care Paramedics and 17 Emergency Telecommunicators. Their training equips them to provide critical pre-hospital care and to support Toronto’s Central Ambulance Communications Centre, which serves as the vital link between the public and paramedic-based health care.

“Congratulations to our Toronto Paramedic Services’ Paramedic and Communications graduates who will be invaluable additions to the City’s frontline emergency services,” said Mayor Chow during her remarks.

The ceremony also honoured existing TPS staff with accolades for long service and acts of bravery. Seven employees received service awards recognizing a minimum of 12 years of dedication. For those exceeding this threshold, bars representing additional decades of service were added to their medals.

A highlight of the event was the recognition of 11 recipients of the Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery. This provincial award, which was elevated to a medal in 2023, celebrates extraordinary courage displayed by paramedics in their service.

“These commendations reflect the dedication, skill, and character of our paramedics,” noted TPS Chief Bikram Chawla. “Their commitment to saving lives and ensuring the safety of Toronto’s residents and visitors is unparalleled.”

TPS is staffed by highly trained paramedics who deliver 24-hour emergency care, often serving as the difference between life and death for those in critical need. Supported by emergency telecommunicators, the Central Ambulance Communications Centre uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure rapid responses to emergencies across Toronto.

As Toronto Paramedic Services continues to grow and evolve, this new cohort of frontline workers and the ongoing recognition of its seasoned staff exemplify the city’s commitment to public safety and exceptional emergency care.
