Toronto Introduces $2 Million Special Events Stabilization Initiative
Toronto, ON – In an effort to bolster the city’s vibrant festival scene, Mayor Olivia Chow unveiled the Special Events Stabilization Initiative (SESI). The new one-time pilot grant program, offering up to $2 million in financial relief, aims to support local special event organizers grappling with rising operating costs, particularly those associated with health, safety, and security.
Toronto’s festivals are integral to the city’s vitality, economic prosperity, and overall livability. They drive significant economic benefits to local businesses and attract tourists from around the globe. Mayor Chow, alongside Councillors Paula Fletcher (Toronto Danforth) and Shelley Carroll (Don Valley North), made the announcement at the lively Festival of South Asia earlier today.
SESI Program Launch and Details
Set to launch in August, SESI will run as a one-year pilot program, expected to assist approximately 40 special event organizers. The initiative is designed to alleviate the financial burdens of not-for-profit organizers who have been hit hardest by increased public safety costs, including security, crowd management, insurance, and health and safety measures.
Applications for SESI will open on August 19 at 9 a.m. and close on September 30 at 5 p.m. To be eligible for funding, organizations must meet specific criteria outlined by the program.
Festivals are part of what makes Toronto so great. But it’s no secret many are struggling.

City’s Commitment to Festivals
Mayor Chow emphasized the city’s ongoing commitment to supporting festival organizers. “I’ve enjoyed attending several festivals this summer and I encourage Torontonians to join me in supporting our local festivals,” she said. “Cultural festivals are part of what makes Toronto an incredible place to live and a destination of choice for tourists around the world. With this funding announcement, we’re continuing to support special event organizers facing financial hardships to ensure they can continue to provide the experiences and events that Torontonians know and love.”
The City of Toronto will continue to collaborate with festival organizers to ensure their success and will advocate for long-term support from other levels of government to sustain local festivals.
Encouragement for Residents and Visitors
As the summer season continues, the city encourages residents and visitors alike to take part in the myriad of festivals happening across Toronto, from Scarborough to Etobicoke and every neighborhood in between. These festivals not only highlight Toronto’s rich cultural diversity but also contribute to the city’s dynamic atmosphere.
