Toronto Implements Higher Parking Fines to Combat Illegal Parking

Toronto, ON – As part of a city-wide initiative to alleviate traffic congestion and improve road safety, the City of Toronto is set to increase fines for 123 parking offences, effective August 1. The new fines aim to discourage illegal parking, stopping, and standing in designated areas, thereby promoting smoother traffic flow and encouraging alternative modes of transportation.

The City Council approved the fine increases in April after a thorough review by city staff. The review found that higher fines would align more appropriately with the severity of the offences, potentially reducing illegal parking habits. This move is part of a broader effort to keep Toronto’s streets safe and efficient.

Significant Changes in Fines:

  • Parking without paying at a parking meter: The fine will rise from $30 to $50.
  • Parking a prohibited vehicle on a bicycle path: This violation will see a substantial increase, from $60 to $200.
  • Non-electric vehicles or electric vehicles parked and not actively charging in an electric vehicle charging stall: A new fine of $75 will be introduced.

These changes are expected to deter drivers from illegal parking, particularly in high-traffic and sensitive areas like bicycle paths and electric vehicle charging stations. The increased fines aim to encourage Torontonians to consider walking, cycling, or using public transit, aligning with the city’s broader environmental and transportation goals.

The City of Toronto emphasizes that it does not communicate parking violations or fines via text message. Residents are advised to disregard any such messages as fraudulent attempts to solicit payment or personal information.

For more information on the updated fines and how to pay or dispute a parking violation, residents can visit the City’s Parking Violations webpage. The City hopes that these measures will contribute to a safer, more accessible urban environment for all.
