Toronto Fire Services Welcomes 107 New Recruits, Strengthening Emergency Response Across the City

Toronto Fire Services welcomes 107 new recruits, strengthening emergency response and expanding frontline capacity across the city.

TORONTOToronto Fire Services (TFS) celebrated a major milestone this week with the graduation of 107 new recruits—including 102 Operations Firefighters and five Telecommunicators—during a ceremony at the Toronto Fire and Paramedic Services Training Centre.

The graduating class reinforces Toronto’s position as home to Canada’s largest fire service and one of North America’s most advanced, internationally accredited fire departments. TFS responds to thousands of emergencies each year across the city’s dense and vertical landscape, delivering fire suppression, medical assistance, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, and critical public safety services.

Intensive professional training for frontline service

The 102 Operations Firefighters completed a demanding 19-week training program, achieving National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) professional qualifications as:

  • Operations Firefighters

  • Fire Prevention Inspectors

  • Public Educators

Their training included live-fire scenarios, high-rise operations, medical response, auto extrication, hazardous materials awareness, and community fire-prevention practices—preparing them to meet Toronto’s unique urban challenges.

The five Telecommunicators, often the first point of contact in life-threatening emergencies, completed an eight-week program and received NFPA certification as Public Safety Telecommunications Personnel. These highly trained professionals will handle emergency calls, coordinate resources and dispatch crews, and provide crucial support to firefighters on the ground.

A proud moment for Toronto Fire Services

In his remarks, Chief Jim Jessop praised the graduating class and emphasized the critical role they will play in keeping Torontonians safe.

“Over the past 19 weeks, our recruit Firefighters have completed rigorous training to prepare for the unique challenges of emergency response in Toronto’s diverse and vertical cityscape. Alongside them, our graduating Telecommunicators have honed the critical skills that make them the heartbeat of Toronto Fire Services… I am confident they will serve our city with courage, compassion and unwavering dedication.”

Toronto remains the only city in North America with an internationally accredited fire service under the Commission on Fire Accreditation International—an achievement that reflects TFS’s ongoing commitment to excellence, community safety, and continuous improvement.

Supporting a growing city

With Toronto’s population surpassing three million and expanding upward with new high-rise communities, the need for highly trained emergency personnel continues to rise. This graduation class helps ensure TFS remains equipped to meet growing service demands while advancing public safety and preparedness across the city.
