Toronto Argonauts Eliminated from Playoff Contention

Bo Levi Mitchell throws four touchdowns as Hamilton’s defence dominates; Argonauts’ late rally falls short at BMO Field.

Toronto, ON – The Toronto Argonauts were officially eliminated from CFL playoff contention Saturday afternoon following a 47–29 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at BMO Field in Week 18 action.

Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell led a commanding performance, throwing for 320 yards and four touchdowns to help the Tiger-Cats tighten their hold on first place in the East Division. The Argos, meanwhile, struggled to contain Hamilton’s pass rush and were unable to recover after an early injury to starting quarterback Nick Arbuckle.

Arbuckle left the game on Toronto’s opening drive with an apparent arm injury, forcing Jarret Doege into action. Doege threw for 323 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions on 34-of-49 passing in relief.

Despite showing flashes of resilience in the second half, including touchdown receptions by David Ungerer III and Kevin Mital, Toronto could not overcome Hamilton’s defensive dominance. The Tiger-Cats recorded nine sacks—four of them from Julian Howsare—and capitalized on five Argonaut turnovers to seal the victory.

Hamilton’s offence kept rolling throughout the afternoon, with Greg Bell adding a rushing touchdown and Marc Liegghio connecting on three field goals. The Tiger-Cats built a commanding early lead, weathered a brief third-quarter Argos comeback, and closed out strong in the fourth with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Kenny Lawler.

Toronto kicker Lirim Hajrullahu remained a bright spot, nailing five field goals, including a long 52-yarder in the second quarter.

The loss drops the Argonauts’ record to 5–11, marking the team’s first playoff miss under head coach Ryan Dinwiddie. Hamilton, now 10–6, moves one step closer to clinching home-field advantage in the East Division.

The Argos will close out their season on the road next week before turning their focus to the off-season, where questions loom over the quarterback position and defensive consistency.
