The Tragically Hip to Be Celebrated in New Docuseries on Prime Video
TORONTO — Prime Video has announced an exciting new docuseries, “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal,” which will offer a comprehensive and intimate look at the legendary Canadian rock band’s 40-year journey. Directed by Mike Downie, the four-part series will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) before screening at various film festivals across the country.
The docuseries aims to provide fans with an unprecedented glimpse into the life and times of The Tragically Hip, known for their poetic lyrics and powerful performances. It will feature never-before-seen personal and archival footage, highlighting the band’s rise from their early days in Kingston, ON, to becoming one of Canada’s most iconic rock acts.

Shaun Alperin, head of content at Prime Video Canada, echoed Downie’s sentiments, emphasizing the cultural significance of the band’s music. “The Tragically Hip’s music continues to be the soundtrack for generations of Canadians,” Alperin noted. “This docuseries offers fans an unprecedented window into the band’s iconic career and the deep kinship they forged with an entire nation through their poetic lyrics and electrifying performances.”
Throughout their career, The Tragically Hip released 14 studio albums, nine of which topped Canadian charts, and won 17 Juno Awards. They were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. Their 2016 farewell tour, following frontman Gord Downie’s terminal cancer diagnosis, was a significant cultural event, watched by millions across the country.
Produced by Courage Films with backing from Ontario Creates and the Government of Canada, “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal” will provide an in-depth exploration of the band’s legacy. The series is set to join Prime Video’s lineup of Canadian originals, which includes acclaimed titles such as “Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe” and “Luxe Listings: Toronto.”
