Susan Cooper Appointed Chief Justice of the Nunavut Court of Justice

Ottawa, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of the Honourable Susan Cooper as the new Chief Justice of the Nunavut Court of Justice. This appointment marks a significant milestone in Canada’s judiciary as Chief Justice Cooper takes over from the Honourable Neil A. Sharkey, who retired earlier this year on April 13.

Chief Justice Cooper, a distinguished judge of the Nunavut Court of Justice, brings extensive legal experience to the role. She is highly regarded within the legal community for her contributions across a broad spectrum of legal areas.

“I wish the Honourable Susan Cooper every success as she takes on her new role as Chief Justice of the Nunavut Court of Justice. She is a respected member of the legal community and has extensive experience in many areas of law. I am confident she will be a great asset to the people of Nunavut,” said Prime Minister Trudeau in a statement accompanying the announcement.

The role of Chief Justice involves not only the leadership and administration of the court but also membership in the Canadian Judicial Council, which focuses on enhancing the quality of judicial services in Canada’s superior courts. Chief Justices are appointed by the Governor General following recommendations from the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Chief Justice Cooper’s appointment reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring strong leadership within Canada’s judicial system, particularly in serving the unique legal needs of Nunavut’s communities.
