SmartTrack King-Liberty GO Station: Early Works Begin to Shape Toronto’s Transit Future

Toronto — Toronto’s transit landscape is set for a significant transformation with the commencement of early construction works for the new SmartTrack King-Liberty GO Station. This vital phase of the project marks the beginning of a major infrastructure upgrade that promises to enhance urban rapid transit across the city.

The SmartTrack initiative, a joint effort between the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto, and Metrolinx, is poised to redefine Toronto’s public transit system. The King-Liberty GO Station, strategically located on King Street West near Hanna Avenue and Atlantic Avenue along the Kitchener GO rail corridor, is one of five new stations planned under this transformative project.

Construction Phase and Impact

Starting in November 2023, construction crews will undertake several preparatory activities including tree and shrub removal, noise wall relocation, and the demolition of retaining walls. These early works are essential for setting up the construction staging areas and laying the groundwork for future station infrastructure.

Environmental Considerations

The removal of trees marked for construction will be managed carefully. Metrolinx’s Vegetation Program ensures that affected trees are either safely relocated or processed into wood chips, with new plantings coordinated through conservation partnerships to offset environmental impacts.

Work Schedule and Community Impact

The construction is slated to last for approximately six months, with work scheduled Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and overnight from Monday to Saturday between 7:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Overnight work is crucial to avoid disruptions to daytime rail operations.

While no major impacts on traffic or transit are expected, temporary sidewalk closures along Sudbury Street will be necessary. Pedestrians are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to posted signage for safety.

Looking Ahead

Once completed, the SmartTrack King-Liberty GO Station will be a key link in Toronto’s urban rapid transit network, improving access and connectivity across the city. This project is expected to play a significant role in easing congestion and enhancing the overall efficiency of Toronto’s transit system.

Residents and businesses in the area will have opportunities to engage with Metrolinx’s community team for updates and inquiries throughout the construction period. For more information or to provide feedback, the public can contact Metrolinx directly or visit their website.

The SmartTrack project represents a major step forward in Toronto’s commitment to modernizing its transit infrastructure and enhancing the daily commute for thousands of residents.
