Skip the Dishes Partners with Food Banks Canada for Doorstep Food Donation Drive in Toronto

Toronto, ON – Skip the Dishes and Food Banks Canada are joining forces this Giving Tuesday to address a growing food insecurity crisis in Canada. The initiative, spearheaded by Skip, aims to tackle barriers to food donations by offering a doorstep food donation pick-up service for Toronto residents. This marks the fifth consecutive year the delivery giant has partnered with Food Banks Canada for its annual Giving Tuesday campaign.

Starting tomorrow, Toronto residents can sign up at www.GivewithSkip.ca to participate in the program. On December 3, participants are encouraged to leave a box of non-perishable food items on their doorsteps, which Skip drivers will collect and deliver directly to the Daily Bread Food Bank. For every pickup made, Skip has pledged a $100 donation to Food Banks Canada. The company is also matching all Giving Tuesday donations made to Food Banks Canada nationwide, with a total commitment of $200,000.

“Canadian food banks have seen a staggering 90% increase in visits since 2019, highlighting the urgent need for action and initiatives like this,” said Erin Filey-Wronecki, Chief Development and Partnerships Officer at Food Banks Canada. “Through Skip’s generous support and innovative initiatives, we’re able to provide critical help to more Canadians.”

Record-High Food Bank Usage in Canada

The program comes as food bank usage reaches unprecedented levels. According to Food Banks Canada’s 2024 HungerCount Report:

  • Over 2 million food bank visits were recorded in March 2024 alone—the highest monthly total in history.
  • Children accounted for more than one-third of visits, with 700,000 visits in March.
  • Nearly one in five food bank clients are employed, highlighting the impact of rising food and housing costs.

“By removing barriers Canadians face when trying to give back, we hope to make a meaningful impact this holiday season,” said Melanie Fatouros-Richardson, Vice President of Communications and Government Relations at Skip.

How to Participate

Toronto residents can register for the program online through December 3. Those outside the Toronto pick-up area are encouraged to donate directly to Food Banks Canada at www.FoodBanksCanada.ca/Skip. Donations made between November 25 and December 3 will be matched by Skip, further amplifying their impact.

A Commitment to Community

Skip has supported Food Banks Canada through its Giving Tuesday campaigns since 2019, providing nearly 5 million meals to date. The partnership also includes weekly food donations from Skip Express Lane locations to local food banks, underscoring Skip’s commitment to addressing food insecurity year-round.

Food Banks Canada continues to advocate for systemic solutions to hunger while distributing critical food and resources. Since 2010, the organization has provided over $829 million in food support and $245 million in funding to its network of 5,500 food banks and community organizations.
