Sheldon Cassimy Returns as Head Coach for Brampton Honey Badgers

Brampton, ON – The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that Sheldon Cassimy will return as the team’s head coach and assistant general manager for a second consecutive season. This marks his sixth year with the organization and his continued role in shaping the franchise’s future.

Cassimy, the fourth head coach in the Honey Badgers’ history, has been with the team since 2020, serving under former head coaches Antoine Broxsie and Ryan Schmidt. His tenure included a key role in the team’s 2022 CEBL championship victory. Cassimy took over as head coach last March, leading the team to a 6-14 record in his first full season. Despite challenges, Brampton maintained a strong presence at home with a 5-5 record at the CAA Centre.

“The Honey Badgers organization holds a special place in my heart,” said Cassimy. “Coming into my sixth season with the team, second as head coach and assistant GM, we will continue to nurture our culture of performance at a championship caliber level.”

Cassimy’s coaching journey with the Honey Badgers began with unexpected opportunities. He stepped in for Broxsie during the 2023 season while Broxsie was with the Cleveland Cavaliers for NBA Summer League. His first game as a professional head coach came in 2022 when Schmidt was unavailable for a June 30 game against the Guelph Nighthawks. Cassimy led the team to a commanding 95-76 victory.

Beyond the CEBL, Cassimy serves as the lead assistant coach for McMaster University’s men’s basketball program. He has been with the Marauders for four years, contributing to their success despite a challenging start to their most recent season. McMaster finished strong, securing a three-game win streak in February with victories over Toronto Metropolitan University and Brock University.

“We’re thrilled to have Coach Sheldon back with us this season,” said Jermaine Anderson, general manager and vice president of basketball operations. “His commitment to player development, professionalism and genuine care for our players set him apart. His leadership will continue to elevate our organization.”

Cassimy’s impact with the Honey Badgers extends beyond the regular CEBL season. He led the team’s Basketball Champions League Americas (BCLA) squad in their first action at the CAA Centre on February 7, 2023, against Nicaragua’s Real Estelí.

Before joining the CEBL, Cassimy worked as a lead skill development coach at the Canada Basketball Training Centre from 2017-2019. His coaching career began as an assistant at the University of Toronto in 2014 before joining Ryerson University for their 2015-16 season, during which the Rams captured the OUA Championship. As a player, he competed at Burman University, leading the Bobcats to four consecutive conference championships while earning a degree in Health and Wellness.

Cassimy’s return comes as the Honey Badgers transition to new ownership under Leonard Asper, CEO of Anthem Sports & Entertainment. The team will open its 2024 CEBL campaign on the road against the Montreal Alliance on May 18, followed by a May 21 matchup against the Ottawa BlackJacks. Brampton will host its first home game at the CAA Centre on May 25 against the Scarborough Shooting Stars.
