Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Parish in Mississauga Celebrates 90 Years

MISSISSAUGA — Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Parish, a vital cultural and spiritual hub for Slovak-Canadians, celebrated its 90th anniversary on November 3, 2024. The church, located in the heart of Mississauga, marked the occasion with a Mass of Thanksgiving that brought together community members and dignitaries.

Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, MPP for Mississauga Centre, attended the anniversary celebrations, joining worshippers in the service and paying tribute to her Slovak heritage. “It was a beautiful and moving Mass of Thanksgiving,” Kusendova-Bashta shared in a social media post, expressing her gratitude to Archbishop Jozef Haľko for leading the liturgy. She reflected on her family history, lighting a candle in memory of her grandparents, Eva Kusendova and Miroslav Kusenda.

The Mass was followed by a gathering that celebrated the church’s role as both a place of worship and a community centre for Slovak-Canadians. For nine decades, Saints Cyril and Methodius Parish has played a pivotal role in preserving Slovak culture, hosting events that promote traditions and strengthen connections among community members.

The church has grown alongside the Slovak-Canadian community, adapting to the evolving needs of the faithful while maintaining deep ties to Slovakia. As it reaches this milestone, the parish remains a beacon of faith, culture, and support, serving as a testament to the resilience and unity of Slovak-Canadians in the Greater Toronto Area.

The celebration was a reminder of the rich heritage that the parish continues to uphold, with many attendees reflecting on the church’s impact over the years and its promise for future generations.
