Royal Canadian Mint Launches FIFA World Cup 2026 $1 Coin Ahead of Toronto Matches
FIFA World Cup 2026 coin enters circulation as Canada prepares for tournament matches
VANCOUVER — The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a new commemorative $1 circulation coin celebrating FIFA World Cup 2026™, marking Canada’s role as one of three host nations for the global tournament.
The coin was officially introduced May 14 at BC Place in Vancouver by officials from the Royal Canadian Mint and FIFA ahead of next months tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Toronto and Vancouver are set to host a combined 13 FIFA World Cup 2026™ matches, with Canada’s Men’s National Team scheduled to play in both Canadian host cities.
New coin enters circulation across Canada
The commemorative coin is being released in both colourized and standard struck versions, with a total mintage of three million coins, including two million colourized editions.
Beginning May 14, Canadians will start seeing the new coin appear in circulation through banks and businesses nationwide.
The reverse side of the coin was designed by Canadian artist Glen Green and features:
- The FIFA26 CAN maple leaf mosaic
- The official FIFA World Cup 2026™ emblem
- A moving soccer ball design
- The engraved names “Toronto” and “Vancouver” recognizing Canada’s host cities
The colourized version uses orange and red tones intended to symbolize soccer fans uniting in support of their teams.
The obverse features the effigy of King Charles III designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
Toronto and Vancouver preparing for FIFA World Cup 2026™
The FIFA World Cup 2026™ tournament will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, bringing international attention to both Canadian host cities.
Toronto is preparing to host several matches as part of the city’s broader FIFA World Cup infrastructure and tourism strategy.
Federal officials described the commemorative coin as both a collectible keepsake and a symbol of Canada’s participation on the global stage.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 is a landmark moment for our nation, and this $1 circulation coin captures the pride and unity that come with welcoming the world to our communities,” said Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne in a statement released by the Royal Canadian Mint.
Simon Kamel, Interim President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, said the organization was proud to commemorate the first FIFA World Cup men’s tournament matches ever played in Canada.
Collectible sets and specialty rolls available
In addition to circulation coins, the Royal Canadian Mint is offering:
- Five-coin collectible sets
- Special wrap rolls in colourized and standard versions
- FIFA World Cup 2026™ precious metal collector coins
The collectible sets also include themed 25-cent coins highlighting:
- Canada Welcomes the World
- The official FIFA mascot
- Match-inspired artwork
The Mint says packaging designs feature variable printing using official FIFA colour palettes, making each package visually unique.

The release of the coin adds to growing anticipation surrounding FIFA World Cup 2026™ events planned across Canada.
Toronto continues preparing for increased tourism, international media attention and fan experiences tied to the tournament, including public watch parties, transportation planning and downtown event programming.
The commemorative coin is expected to become one of the most widely circulated Canadian sports-themed coins in recent years as excitement builds toward kickoff in 2026.
