Province Moves Forward with Hazel McCallion Line Extensions into Downtown Brampton and Mississauga
Brampton – The Ontario government is advancing plans to extend the Hazel McCallion Line into the downtown cores of Brampton and Mississauga, including a proposed underground tunnel for the Brampton portion. The extension will connect one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities with fast, affordable, and reliable transit, marking a significant step in the province’s ambitious transit expansion plans.
Premier Doug Ford announced the development, emphasizing its transformative impact on Brampton residents. “By tunnelling the Hazel McCallion Line into downtown Brampton, we’re helping tens of thousands of daily riders connect seamlessly to world-class transit that will extend across the region,” Ford said.
The Brampton extension will involve detailed planning and design to optimize the route’s alignment and construction. The project aims to integrate the Hazel McCallion Line with the Brampton Innovation District GO Station while aligning with the city’s vision for Main Street and the downtown core.

Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, reiterated the province’s commitment to enhancing transit in Brampton, one of Ontario’s fastest-growing cities. “Last year, we made a promise to pave the way for a new priority transit extension that will shorten the daily commutes of tens of thousands of people in Brampton, and we’re getting it done,” Sarkaria stated.
The extensions are part of Ontario’s $70 billion investment in transit over the next decade, a plan that includes GO Transit expansion, new roads, and the construction of Highway 413. In addition to improving connections for Brampton Transit, Züm, MiWay, and GO Transit riders, the Hazel McCallion Line extension is expected to reduce gridlock for drivers and provide time-saving benefits for transit users.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown described the project as a “game changer” for the city. “The commitment from Premier Ford and the Government of Ontario to fund the extension of the LRT into our city, including a tunneled section into downtown, is truly a game changer,” Brown said. “It’s a bold step toward shaping a future where Brampton continues to thrive and flourish as a dynamic, modern city.”
The project is set to undergo further planning and development in the coming months, with Metrolinx leading efforts to finalize details and ensure the extension supports the needs of Brampton and Mississauga’s growing communities.
The Hazel McCallion Line extensions represent one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the region’s history, poised to enhance connectivity, reduce commute times, and support the growth of vibrant, transit-oriented communities.
