Prime Minister Trudeau to Host Cabinet Retreat Amid U.S. Tariff Concerns

Ottawa, ON — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that his Cabinet will hold a retreat in Quebec’s Outaouais region from January 20 to 21, 2025. The retreat will focus on addressing potential tariff threats from the incoming United States administration and reinforcing Canada’s trade and security ties with its southern neighbor.

With economic uncertainty looming, the retreat is aimed at safeguarding Canadian interests and ensuring continued economic cooperation between the two countries. The Prime Minister emphasized the need to protect Canadian jobs, investments, and the mutually beneficial trade relationship Canada shares with the U.S.

“Our government is unwaveringly focused on protecting and defending Canadian interests. With the threat of tariffs from the incoming United States administration, Team Canada will use expanded capabilities to strengthen Canada’s relationship with the U.S., protect Canadian investment and jobs, and make unequivocally clear the mutually beneficial relationship our two countries share.”

The Cabinet will build on Canada’s existing relationship with its closest ally to advance shared priorities, including bolstering cross-border trade, strengthening supply chains, and creating jobs on both sides of the border.

Canada’s recent $1.3 billion border security plan underscores the country’s commitment to a secure and prosperous partnership with the U.S. This plan includes expanded personnel, advanced technology investments, and enhanced law enforcement coordination.

The retreat also aims to explore ways to reinforce Canada’s position in global markets amid increasing trade tensions, with a focus on fostering economic resilience and ensuring sustainable growth.

This effort comes as Canada navigates a shifting political landscape in the U.S., emphasizing the importance of bilateral collaboration to maintain the stability of both economies.
