Prime Minister Trudeau Meets with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at NATO Summit

Washington, D.C. – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with President Yoon Suk Yeol of the Republic of Korea today on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Washington, D.C. The meeting reaffirmed the strong friendship and commitment to mutual interests between Canada and South Korea.

During their discussion, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Yoon emphasized the positive momentum in the bilateral relationship. They announced the forthcoming launch of the Canada-Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership action plan and looked forward to the upcoming High-Level Foreign and Defence Policy Dialogue (2+2).

The leaders highlighted the expanding trade and investment relationship between the two countries, exploring opportunities for defense industry cooperation and reinforcing their commitment to economic growth. They also discussed aligning priorities for Canada’s G7 and Korea’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation presidencies in 2025.

In addition to economic and strategic discussions, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Yoon Suk Yeol addressed Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. They underscored the importance of the NATO Alliance and its partnerships with the Indo-Pacific region in maintaining global peace and security. Both leaders agreed to stay in regular contact to advance issues of common interest, including challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
