Trudeau Meets Premier of Northwest Territories to Discuss Arctic Security and Climate Resilience

Ottawa, Ontario – Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the Premier of the Northwest Territories, R.J. Simpson, for a high-level discussion on shared priorities. Their conversation focused on strengthening Arctic security, advancing critical infrastructure projects, and ensuring affordable housing for Northerners.

The meeting comes at a time when Canada’s North faces growing challenges, including climate change and increasing global interest in the Arctic. Both leaders emphasized the need to bolster Arctic sovereignty and security while accelerating clean economic growth in the region. Premier Simpson and Prime Minister Trudeau highlighted the Northwest Territories’ rich reserves of critical minerals as key to Canada’s energy security and economic future.

“The potential of critical minerals and clean electricity is immense, and the Northwest Territories will play a crucial role in harnessing these resources for the benefit of all Canadians,” Trudeau stated.

In addition to economic opportunities, climate change impacts were a key focus. The leaders discussed the ongoing effects of warming temperatures in the North, which have increased the urgency of addressing climate resilience. They reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively with Indigenous communities to mitigate climate threats.

Trudeau and Simpson also acknowledged the upcoming visit of the Northwest Territories Council of Leaders to Ottawa. This delegation will play a key role in advancing reconciliation efforts. The Prime Minister praised the Northwest Territories for its leadership, noting that the territory is one of only three Canadian jurisdictions to pass legislation implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Both leaders expressed optimism about continued cooperation on these important issues. “We remain committed to a close partnership to build a brighter future for Northerners and all Canadians,” said Premier Simpson.

This meeting underscores the federal government’s ongoing focus on the North as a critical area for Canada’s long-term strategy, from energy security to Indigenous reconciliation and climate adaptation.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Premier Simpson agreed to maintain close contact as they continue to collaborate on issues vital to the North’s future.
