Prime Minister Trudeau Hosts Emir of Qatar in Ottawa: Discussions Focus on Middle East Conflict, Ukraine, and Global Security
Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hosted His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, in Canada on September 17 and 18, 2024. Their discussions primarily focused on global security concerns, including the ongoing Middle East conflict and the need for humanitarian interventions.
One key issue addressed was the escalating violence in Gaza. Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire, the immediate release of hostages, and ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches civilians. Trudeau firmly condemned Hamas’ actions, calling for the group to lay down its arms and release hostages. He noted that Hamas does not represent the broader Palestinian population or their legitimate aspirations for statehood. He also recognized Qatar’s role in facilitating the release of hostages and aiding foreign nationals in their safe exit from Gaza.

Other geopolitical issues, such as the conflicts in Sudan, Haiti, and Venezuela, were also covered.
