Prime Minister Trudeau Commemorates Vimy Ridge Day, Honors Canadian Soldiers’ Sacrifices

Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a poignant statement today, marking Vimy Ridge Day and paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of Canadian soldiers who fought in the historic Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War I.

Trudeau reflected on the significance of April 9, 1917, when Canadian troops launched a daring assault on the heavily fortified German positions atop Vimy Ridge in northern France. After four days of intense combat, the Canadians emerged victorious, capturing the ridge but at a tremendous cost. More than 7,000 Canadian soldiers were injured, and nearly 3,600 made the ultimate sacrifice, never returning home.
