Prime Minister Carney Issues Statement on Yom Kippur
Canada’s leader extends greetings to Jewish communities and reaffirms commitment to combating antisemitism.
Ottawa, Ontario — Prime Minister Mark Carney has released a statement to mark Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, offering his best wishes to Jewish communities across Canada and around the world.
Yom Kippur, which begins at sunset tonight, concludes the ten days of repentance — a period of reflection, renewal, and seeking forgiveness. In his statement, the Prime Minister recognized the deep significance of the day and acknowledged the contributions of Jewish Canadians to the country’s cultural, social, and economic life.
At sunset tonight and through tomorrow, Jewish communities in Canada will mark Yom Kippur.
At this time of reflection, renewal, and repentance, I’m wishing all those who observe this sacred day a meaningful Yom Kippur and an easy fast.
G’mar chatima tova.

Carney also highlighted growing challenges faced by Jewish communities, noting that the federal government recently introduced legislation aimed at protecting religious and cultural buildings and addressing the rise of antisemitism in Canada.
The Prime Minister’s message emphasized resilience and remembrance while underscoring the importance of building a country where Jewish Canadians can live openly and safely.
“For those observing at home and abroad, I wish you a meaningful Yom Kippur and best wishes for the Jewish Year of 5786,” Carney said in closing.
