Prime Minister Carney Unveils Canada’s G7 Priorities Ahead of Kananaskis Summit

As Canada prepares to host world leaders in Kananaskis, Prime Minister Carney unveils a bold G7 agenda focused on global security, clean energy, and digital transformation.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has laid out Canada’s vision for this year’s G7 Leaders’ Summit, announcing a focused agenda that reflects growing global instability and economic transition. With Canada set to host the summit in Kananaskis, Alberta from June 15 to 17, the priorities will centre on security, energy, and international partnerships.

Carney emphasized that the 2025 summit marks 50 years since the creation of the G7, a group of advanced economies that came together in the wake of global disruption. “Canada has what the world wants and the values to which others aspire,” Carney said. “The G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis is a moment for Canada to work with reliable partners to meet challenges with unity, purpose, and force. Canada is ready to lead.”

Three Pillars of Canada’s G7 Agenda

Canada’s agenda for the summit is structured around three main objectives:

  • Protecting Communities and the World: Addressing transnational threats such as foreign interference, global conflict, and organized crime, while improving international response mechanisms for crises like wildfires.

  • Building Energy Security and Accelerating the Digital Transition: Strengthening critical mineral supply chains and supporting the growth of artificial intelligence and quantum technologies to spur economic growth.

  • Securing the Partnerships of the Future: Unlocking large-scale private investment to develop infrastructure, create better jobs, and open emerging markets.

In addition, G7 leaders will discuss securing a just and lasting peace for Ukraine and broader coalition-building with partners beyond the G7 who share democratic values.

G7 Returns to Kananaskis

This year’s summit will be held on the traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy and the Treaty 7 Nations in Southern Alberta. It marks Canada’s seventh presidency of the G7 and the first time in over two decades that world leaders will gather in the Rocky Mountains for the forum.

As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, Canada’s message is clear: it intends to lead with conviction, leveraging its resource wealth, democratic stability, and innovation capacity to strengthen both domestic and international security.
