Prime Minister Carney speaks with María Corina Machado to reaffirm Canada’s support for democracy in Venezuela

Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke on Saturday with Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado, reaffirming Canada’s support for a peaceful, democratic, and Venezuelan-led transition in Venezuela.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the conversation focused on the deteriorating political and human rights situation in Venezuela and the ongoing repression under the regime of Nicolás Maduro. Both leaders condemned the Maduro government’s actions against political opponents and civil society, and stressed the urgency of advancing freedom, democracy, and prosperity for the Venezuelan people.

Canada reaffirms support for democratic transition

During the call, Prime Minister Carney thanked Ms. Machado for her continued advocacy on behalf of Venezuelans facing political persecution and economic hardship. He reiterated Canada’s longstanding position in favour of a peaceful, negotiated transition that is led by Venezuelans themselves and grounded in respect for democratic principles and the rule of law.

The Prime Minister emphasised that any transition process must be anchored in the sovereign right of the Venezuelan people to determine their own future through democratic means, free from intimidation or repression.

Commitment to international coordination

Prime Minister Carney and Ms. Machado also discussed the importance of coordinated international engagement in supporting democratic change in Venezuela. Canada has consistently worked alongside like-minded partners to apply diplomatic pressure, support accountability measures, and advocate for the restoration of democratic institutions in the country.

The Prime Minister confirmed that Canada will continue to engage with international partners to promote stability in the region while supporting a Venezuelan-led process that reflects the will of the people.

Ongoing engagement

Prime Minister Carney and Ms. Machado agreed to remain in close contact as developments continue. The discussion forms part of Canada’s broader diplomatic efforts to support democracy, human rights, and peaceful conflict resolution in the Americas.

Canada has previously issued statements and taken coordinated action with international partners in response to developments in Venezuela, underscoring its commitment to democratic governance and respect for international law.
