Prime Minister Carney Meets with Council on Canada-U.S. Relations as Tariff Concerns Loom

Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Mark Carney met virtually Wednesday with the Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-U.S. Relations to discuss pressing trade issues between the two nations, including the anticipated implementation of new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods set to take effect on April 2.

The Council, which includes leaders from business, innovation, and policy sectors, serves as an advisory body to the Prime Minister and Cabinet on critical matters affecting Canada’s relationship with its largest trading partner. During the meeting, discussions focused on Canada’s response to these potential tariffs, including countermeasures, support for affected businesses and workers, and additional steps taken by provincial and territorial governments.

Prime Minister Carney reiterated the importance of maintaining a strong and respectful dialogue with the United States while emphasizing Canada’s broader economic and security strategies. He highlighted the need to strengthen Arctic security, diversify trade by forging new international partnerships, and position Canada as the leading economy in the G7.

With Canada’s economy deeply intertwined with that of the U.S., the prospect of new tariffs has raised concerns among industries that rely on cross-border trade. The federal government is considering various countermeasures to protect Canadian businesses and ensure economic stability in the face of shifting trade policies.

As April 2 approaches, government officials and industry leaders will continue to monitor the situation closely, with further updates expected in the coming weeks. The federal government remains committed to advocating for fair trade practices and supporting Canadian enterprises through any potential disruptions.
