“As families, friends, and communities gather, Diwali is a powerful reminder of the strength of unity – the power of community to overcome challenges, together,” Carney said. “It is also an occasion to recognize the many contributions of Canadians from Hindu, Jain, Sikh, and Buddhist faiths – communities deeply woven into our cultural fabric.”
The Prime Minister highlighted Diwali’s deeper message — that every Canadian can help “find the light of service and generosity, and let it shine on all.”
Communities across the Greater Toronto Area are marking the occasion with celebrations in temples, gurdwaras, community centres, and city halls, bringing together people of all backgrounds to share in the festival’s spirit of joy, reflection, and unity.
Diwali, also known as Deepavali, symbolizes new beginnings and the victory of light over darkness. For many, it’s a time to clean homes, light diyas, exchange sweets, and celebrate with loved ones, while also reflecting on kindness, gratitude, and giving back to others.
