Prime Minister Carney Extends Greetings to Sikh Communities on Bandi Chhor Divas

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has extended warm greetings to Sikh communities in Canada and around the world on the occasion of Bandi Chhor Divas, a celebration of freedom, faith, and compassion.

In his statement, the Prime Minister reflected on the festival’s enduring message of selflessness and justice, honouring Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, who secured not only his own release from imprisonment but also that of 52 princes — a powerful act symbolizing liberation and equality.

“Bandi Chhor Divas brings families together to celebrate the values of service, faith, and generosity,” said Carney. “In a fast-changing, more uncertain world, this day reminds us of the strength found in unity and the importance of standing for what is right.”

Observed by Sikhs worldwide, Bandi Chhor Divas often coincides with Diwali and is celebrated through lighting gurdwaras, sharing meals (langar), and community service. Across the Greater Toronto Area, gurdwaras are marking the day with prayers, volunteer events, and light displays symbolizing the victory of freedom over oppression.

Prime Minister Carney reaffirmed the government’s appreciation for the Sikh community’s contributions to Canada’s cultural, economic, and social life, noting that Sikh values of seva (selfless service) and sarbat da bhala (well-being for all) continue to enrich the nation’s shared fabric.
