Prime Minister Announces Senior Public Service Appointments

Ottawa, Ontario – The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced key changes in the senior ranks of the public service today, effective later this month.

Sandra McCardell, currently serving as the Assistant Deputy Minister of the International Affairs Branch at Environment and Climate Change Canada, has been appointed as the Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Her new role will commence on July 22, 2024.

John Moffet, who is presently the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Environmental Protection Branch at Environment and Climate Change Canada, will transition to the role of Associate Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change, also effective July 22, 2024.

Mark Schaan, the Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for the Strategy and Innovation Policy Sector at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, will assume the position of Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet (Artificial Intelligence) at the Privy Council Office. His appointment will be effective from July 29, 2024.

The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to David Vigneault for his dedicated service as the Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and extended his best wishes for Vigneault’s future endeavors.

These appointments reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening its leadership in key areas such as international affairs, environmental protection, and artificial intelligence, ensuring continued excellence in public service.
