Prime Minister Carney meets Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Ukraine and Arctic security

PARIS, FRANCE — Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday on the margins of the Coalition of the Willing meeting in Paris, as allied leaders continued discussions on global security and Ukraine’s defence.

During the meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their shared and enduring support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s continued aggression. They agreed on the importance of achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, backed by robust and credible security guarantees.

As close partners and fellow members of North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Frederiksen also discussed Arctic security, highlighting growing investments by both countries in defence and critical infrastructure across the region. The leaders explored opportunities to deepen bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors, including critical metals and minerals, life sciences, quantum technology, and energy.

Prime Minister Carney emphasized Canada’s firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, including Greenland, noting that these principles must be respected in accordance with international law. He also affirmed Canada’s support for the joint statement on Greenland issued by Denmark and European leaders earlier that day, underscoring that decisions about Greenland’s future rest with Greenland and Denmark.

Canada, the Prime Minister said, will continue to work closely with Denmark, Greenland, and international partners to uphold shared responsibilities for security, stability, and resilience in the Arctic.

The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact as discussions continue among allied nations.
